"Defeaters as indicators of ignorance: a new thery of defeat and of rational belief"

In this paper, we defend a (mostly) novel view of defeat. We think that a good account of defeat will be extensionally adequate, will hopefully be monistic (i.e., identify some common characteristic that defeaters share in common that explains why they count as defeaters), and will mesh well with some more comprehensive normative framework.
We look at a view that doesn't meet these desiderata, a view that seems to meet most of them, and conclude with a view that we think meets each of them. On the view that we propose, we think that defeaters defeat because they are indicators that we're not in a good position to know something. We show that this view fits well with an attractive account of (objective) epistemic norms and an attractive account of subjective rightness.
