This paper is about the nature of epistemic and practical norms. First, I introduce constitutivism about epistemic norms – roughly, the view that the nature of epistemic norms is in some way derivable from what’s constitutive of belief – and outline some of its main attractions. Second, I sketch how a particular version of this view might look like, focusing in particular on how a plausible account of representational activity can help in making categorical epistemic normativity intelligible. Third, I suggest that constitutivism about epistemic normativity, if true, puts significant pressure on so-called ‘quietist’ accounts of practical normativity, according to which the nature of practical norms isn’t derivable from an external foundation.
